Boundless Teams Up with Global Text Project to Support Increased Educational Access

At Boundless, we believe that access to high quality education is a universal right. To us, that means access to quality academic content, on any device, at any time, all over the world. We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the Global Text Project, an organization that shares our vision of universal access to academic content.

The Global Text ProjectThe Global Text Project has been a leader in open access since 2006. Its mission is to create and distribute free quality content to developing nations, where high costs have eliminated textbooks from many higher education classrooms. For example, a USD $108 biology textbook sells for USD $51 in Africa. Gross National Income per capita in the United States was $53,700 in 2013, but in Uganda it was $510. In many developing countries, professors only keep a few copies of the textbook or they write their own notes for students. The Global Text Project and Boundless are working together to provide quality content for these classrooms.

The Global Text Project was co-founded by Don McCubbrey and Rick Watson. Don McCubbrey is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Business Information and Analytics in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver, and Rick Watson is a Regents Professor and the J. Rex Fuqua Distinguished Chair for Internet Strategy in the Department of MIS at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business.

Under Don and Rick’s guidance, the Global Text Project has published over 100 titles, ranging from Business Statistics to the Basics of Fluid Mechanics, many of which have been translated into different languages. They began their endeavor funding from the Jacobs Foundation to write two pilot textbooks, one of which was Business Fundamentals by co-founder Don McCubbrey. Like Boundless, the Global Text Project hosts all of its textbooks under Creative Commons licenses, enabling students and educators to use and share the books for free. Faculty from all over the world have collaborated to produce open textbooks for the Global Text Project.

As the first step in our partnership, we published Don McCubbrey’s Business Fundamentals textbook on our new community publishing platform. Freed from its PDF format, the textbook can now be viewed on any device. We hope that Boundless can make it even simpler to share open resources like Business Fundamentals with millions of students and educators.

We are excited to work with The Global Text Project to increase access to education all over the world. By sharing books like Business Fundamentals with our millions of users, we are proud to support the vision of the Global Text Project. We know that affordable content can provide an innovative solution to classrooms in developing countries. Together, the Global Text Project and Boundless will be able to offer digital textbooks for students and educators all over the world.
